The only child of Loki who stayed on the side of goodness, Sleipnir was said to be the most powerful horse in Norse mythology. With eight legs and a winged body, Sleipnir could traverse across the nine realms with ease and speed, and thus became Odin’s trusted steed. Every bit of his incredible story is represented through both the reverse and the obverse of this piece, making it a fine piece of art to possess.

The Children of Loki

Loki, also known as the God of Mischief, is one of the most prominent gods of Norse mythology. Armed with shape-shifting powers and excellent skills in cunning trickery, Loki was known to be extremely clever. With the female giant Angerboda he fathered 3 children – Hel, Jormungandr the Serpent, and Fenrir the Wolf. When they were born, it was foreseen that these 3 children would cause great destruction and lead to Ragnarok, the Twilight or Doom of the Gods. On the contrary, Sleipnir,  the eight-legged horse whom Loki borne by himself, became the trusted steed of Odin – its exceptional strength and speed an invaluable asset to him in battle. This series was created in honour of the great power and strength of the children of Loki.

The Eight-Legged Horse

Said to be the most powerful steed to exist in Norse mythology, Sleipnir was born from unusual and extraordinary circumstances. In order to prevent the master of Svadilfari, the magical horse, from completing the wall around Asgard and earning the hand of Goddess Freya, Loki lured Svadilfari into mating. Loki transformed into a beautiful mare, successfully drawing Svadilfari away from his master, who eventually could not complete his mission without the help of his magical horse. Bred from a god and a giant’s stallion, Sleipnir was thus born with the ability to transcend the nine realms of the world, his eight legs long and strong to cover ground and paddle in water, while his winged body took flight with ease. Sleipnir was gifted by Loki to Odin, the King of the Aesir gods. He accompanied Odin through all his battles and journeys, taking him across the nine realms at incomparable speed. Such was Sleipnir’s power and strength that he was claimed to be the best amongst horses with no equal.

Finish

Here Odin sits on the back of Sleipnir, a single fist holding his reins while Sleipnir gallops ahead determinedly. The two present an impressive sight as they ride into battle with no fear. Sleipnir’s hooves are shaped with motion and fluidity against an intricate background of the nine realms. Looking closely near the edges, each of the nine are represented with fine artistry from Midgard all through to Helheim, with elements such as skulls, neolithic caves and frozen lakes each being representative of different realms. Thin but severe lightning bolts run across the surface, bringing together Odin’s ability to wield lightning and the sheer speed of Sleipnir as they flash through the nine realms.

On the obverse, deep indentations of Yggdrasil, the Tree of Life, is embedded into the coin. At the center sits Sleipnir’s Norse symbol – an elegant touch to finish this piece of work. The reverse and obverse are reflections of one another and tell the story of the Ascension of Sleipnir beautifully.
