The Chinese Guardian Lion, also known as ‘Stone Lion’
Often referred to as ‘Foo Dogs’ in the West, the Chinese Guardian Lion is a mythical creature that originated from the Han Dynasty and is traditionally depicted in the form of a stone lion statue, translating to ‘石狮 Shí shī’ in Chinese. It is said to have protective powers and the ability to shield and defend one from evil. Coupled with its majestic appearance, it became a befitting figure to be placed at entrances of important sites such as the imperial palace, temples and homes of governmental officials. In modern times, it is also sometimes seen in front of homes of the upper echelons in society as a sign of wealth and power.
